In the mid 1900s, Eaton's tried to develop a subscription grocery service to serve those who could not come to one of their stores. It was typical for people to create a shopping list, send it to Eaton's who would then fill the crate, and then ship the items to the individual. The crate could collapse and then be sent back for repeat business. This relates to the 2019 attempts by stores and Amazon to do shopping on behalf of individuals and ship the items to the home.
