- Narrative
- This object was used by Sue Earles and Sue Anderson in their integrated grade 4/5 local history resource: “The History of Tsawwassen” and “Local Pioneer Study” that they taught at Beach Grove Elementary School in Tsawwassen, BC. The program won the 2003 Governor General’s Excellence in Teaching History Award. These units unearth and focus on the numerous layers of local history to be found in the Delta region. Through simulated archaeological digs, storytelling, recreating myths, designing quilts, analysis of local heritage sites, hands–on work and comparisons with the present, students have a chance to both discover history and gain an appreciation of their place in history. The initiative was born out of a desire to deviate from what they saw as the boring existing curriculum that focused on the story of Fort Langley and the poor existing curriculum for local history.
These objects in association with Ms. Earles’ records illustrate this important aspect of community life. It also documents a story of Delta’s exceptionalism and is a notable episode in the education history of the Delta School District.
The objects are directly related to the “Heritage Artifact Hunt” activity and the “Heritage Homes Artifact Hunt” activity. The class was divided into “table groups” of four students and were given four artefacts to identify according to material, use, and description.
These objects are representative of a time and place in history. It highlights the importance placed on pioneer and settler history and represents a “greatest hits” of objects associated with pioneer life in Delta. It simultaneously represents a lack of access to or knowledge/interest in the contributions of first nations and marginalized groups in Delta due to the lack of artefacts associated to these groups.
